Liverpool suffered their first defeat of 2020 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night as they lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Saul Niguez scored the only goal of the match to hand Atletico a one-goal advantage at the end of their last-16 first leg in the Spanish capital.
It was Liverpool’s second Champions League defeat of the season having also lost to Napoli in the group stages, and it has left the tie delicately poised ahead of the return clash.
Andrew Robertson took to social media after the final whistle to thank the club’s fans for their “incredible support”, and a number responded with praise for the Scottish defender.
Some went a step further and insisted that Robertson was the best player on the pitch over the course of the 90 minutes despite ending up on the losing side.
According to WhoScored, the 25-year-old won three tackles, had one shot and boasted a pass success rate of 91% against Diego Simeone’s team.
No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?
Another fan claimed that Robertson’s display was “one of the positives” on what was a largely disappointing night for the reigning European champions.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will actually play another four matches before the second leg on March 11, facing West Ham United, Watford and Bournemouth in the Premier League in addition to an FA Cup clash against Chelsea on March 3.
Meanwhile, Liverpool reportedly have concerns over a potential summer move for this in-form striker.
